On The Waterfront: Coast enforcers work to curb seaside drops

Coast Guard crews are dealing with an increasing level of human-smuggling networks dropping migrants on islands off the region's coastline, often without food or water.

Since early July, Coast Guard investigators have discovered nearly 30 abandoned immigrants on Southland beaches and along rocky coves on the Channel Islands.

On Monday, authorities described the growing trend wherein smugglers cruise up the California coast and often drop their human cargo on isolated beaches or islands dozens of miles off the mainland.
